Andrew Lister
Andrew Lister's bilingual litigation practice focusses primarily
upon labour and employment law on behalf of employees, employers
and trade unions. As a partner at Mann & Partners, LLP,
Andrew is known for his ardent and fearless representation of
his client's interests in Court and before numerous federal,
provincial and municipal administrative tribunals.
Andrew's particular forte is in helping clients see the "forest
through the trees" and in assisting clients to navigate
their way efficiently through legal minefields. Andrew prides
himself in his proactive approach to problem solving for his
clients, as well as the results he gets for them.
Andrew is from Ottawa and he completed all of his pre-university
schooling here. Andrew earned an Honours B.A. at Dalhousie University
in 1986. He subsequently attained his LL.B.-B.C.L. at McGill
University in 1993 and his LL.M. at the London School of Economics
and Political Science in 1992. Andrew was called to the Bar
in 1994.
Andrew is a member of several professional associations, including
the County of Carleton Law Association, Advocates' Society,
and the Ontario Bar Association.
Andrew has taught industrial relations and Administrative law
at Carleton University, at both the graduate and undergraduate
levels. He is an instructor in the Law Society's Bar Admission
Program and a teacher of Advanced Employment Law at the University
of Ottawa Common Law Faculty.
Andrew has presented papers at the following legal conferences
over the past decade:
- Canadian Institute 1995: When Do the Rights of the Bargaining
Agent Terminate in Contract Out? In Bankruptcy? In Privatization?
- The 5th Annual Six-Minute Employment Lawyer 2002: Dismissing
Public Employees: Burgess
- 20th Anniversary Civil Litigation Updated 2000: The Puzzle
Within the Enigma Wrapped in a Conundrum Insinuated in a Labyrinth:
The Difficulties Inherent in Protecting Employers from Departing
Professional Employees through Restrictive Covenants
- Lawyers' Weekly (September 9, 2005): A More Active Enforcement
of Employment Standards Is Underway
- 25th Anniversary Civil Litigation Updated 2005: Independent
Contractors: Who is the Employer?
- The 9th Annual Six-Minute Employment Lawyer 2006: Wrongful

- Lawyers' Weekly (May 19, 2005): Vicarious Liability of Employer
is a Highly Fact-Dependent Determination
- 12th East Region Solicitors Conference 2006: Amendments to

Andrew also believes strongly in the importance of community
involvement as demonstrated by his active volunteerism with
the organizations he supports. He is a past-president of the
Ottawa Boys and Girls Club (2000-02) as well as the past-president
and current member of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society Board
of Directors (2002-present). Andrew has also participated in
the Great Canadian Theatre Company's Lawyers' Plays, acting
in the 2003, 2004 and 2007 productions.
In his spare time, you will often find Andrew doing "stuff"
with his children, playing or coaching on the soccer pitch,
at a concert or involved in a charitable community event. Few
lawyers in town golf worse than Andrew, but very few slide-tackle
or "head" the soccer ball better than him. In soccer,
as in Court, it is far preferable to have Andrew on your team
than on the opposing side.
