Caspar van Baal
I have been practicing for over 25 years in all aspects of family law. I can assist clients who are preparing for cohabitation or marriage, as well as anyone who is facing separation or divorce. The issues around a separation or divorce include such things as property division, child custody, access and parenting issues, spousal support, child support, and extra-ordinary expenses. I can also assist clients in enforcing or amending separation agreements, changing or terminating spousal support, as well as negotiating and drafting separation, marriage, and cohabitation agreements.
The experience I have gained during my years of practice as a family law lawyer enables me to also conduct family law mediations. In addition, I am trained and experienced as a Collaborative Family Law practitioner. This means that I can offer family mediation and/or Collaborative Family Law as an added service to assist clients who need legal assistance following separation.
I am considered a hands-on, pragmatic, and innovative lawyer who knows when it is necessary for clients to stand up for their rights and advocate forcefully. I also recognize when it is better to resolve legal or practical issues through constructive and efficient discussions. I am a committed and compassionate lawyer who listens to my clients.
I was born and lived in the Netherlands before coming to Canada. I graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985, then graduated from the University of Ottawa Law School in 1988. I was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1990 and have been practicing in family law ever since. I am fluent in Dutch and English so I can offer services in either language. I am also active in the Ottawa community, have served on various boards and I fundraise for numerous charitable organizations.
