Leaves of Absence
A leave of absence allows employees to be able to take paid or unpaid time off from work. Whether they are hired on a full-time, part-time, indeterminate or term basis, an employee may be eligible for a leave of absence. Ontario’s Employment Standards Act details entitlements to pregnancy and parental leave, family caregiver leave, sick leave, amongst others. There may be corresponding income replacement through Employment Insurance. Ontario’s Human Rights Code protects employees from being discriminated against for taking a leave of absence, including for example maternity leave, parental leave or sick leave.
